The Repentant Soul: “For She Loved Much”
The Sinful Woman at His Feet
St. Luke presented our Lord Jesus as a lover of mankind and a friend to sinners, as with the repentant sinful woman in Lk 7:36-50. This passage of the Gospel is read every day in the second watch of the Midnight Prayer, and in the Divine Liturgies.
The Gospel does not tell us what that woman felt when she came to the Lord, nor is her name mentioned. The Spirit left all these things unknown to us, so that this could become the way for each one of us — for every soul hungry for repentance — to wash her sins away and find her comfort in Him.
Seventeen Reflections of a Repentant Heart
She might have done so saying, the sun has tanned me; my mother’s sons were angry with me
Song 1:6, so she came to the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world
Jn 1:9.
She might have felt as a child lost from her father, and when she found Him she wept bitterly.
She found in Him satiety after she had longed even for the pods of the swine, so she came weeping to Him, silently and humbly saying, …make me like one of your hired servants
Lk 15:19.
After she had spent her entire life seeking the fame and fortune of this world and found none, when she found Him she gave away everything to gain the true treasure.
She felt as if she were a fresh spring of water blocked by her sins, so she came to Him and mixed her tears with the true Spring of Life, so that out of her heart would flow rivers of living water Jn 7:37-38.
She found in Him the true, real love — For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son
Jn 3:16 — so she came to Him knowing that God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him
1 Jn 4:16.
She saw in Him the true beauty, compared with her physical one, so she came to Him and laid her beauty down behind His feet. She humbled her hair, her eyes, her lips — even her ego and pride — and His purity surpassed all her worldly attractiveness and purified her.
She came to Him to wash away her sins with her tears, which were purified when they touched Him.
She came to Him laying all her burdens at His feet, to be redeemed by the Cross, which she saw with the eye of prophecy when she touched Him.
She found in Him the true peace and comfort that she could find nowhere else, so she came to Him singing silently with the Church, O King of Peace, grant us Your peace
.
.
She came to Him for protection from the wolves of this world, for she found that He is the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep
Jn 10:11.
When she felt that she had gained nothing from this world, she came to Him silently begging Him to keep her, even among the laborers of the eleventh hour.
She came to Him in true repentance and saw in Him the fulfillment of the prophecy, But He was wounded for our transgressions
Is 53:5.
We do not know whether she heard St. John the Baptist say of Him, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
Jn 1:29, but she found the place of the nails and the spear in His body, and she wept.
She kissed the feet that would lead her to the way of righteousness (St. Augustine).
She shut all her senses to everything around her, to listen to His kind voice and to love Him with all her heart.
.
She felt the slavery of sin, so she came to Him — Christ the Savior, who set all free.
Our Lord expressed all her feelings in one simple phrase:
“She loved much.”
In Silence
This repentant woman introduced to us a new, silent way of repentance.
She stood behind Him silently, to listen to His kind voice.
Silently her heart was repeating, Then You knew my path
Ps 142:1-7.
Silently she shed her tears before Him, and she received His answer: Turn your eyes away from me, for they have overcome me
Song 6:5.
Silently she bowed her head and used her hair as a towel for His feet, and so she was clothed with grace.
Silently she poured out the ointment, and its fragrance filled the whole world throughout the ages.
Silently her lips kissed the Savior’s feet; and those lips, which once led many to death through sin, received life through Him and were purified.
Even at her dismissal she left silently, when the Lord said to her, Your faith has saved you. Go in peace
Lk 7:50. Yet her fame went before her everywhere, and she resembled St. Mary, who kept all these things in her heart
Lk 2:51.
Blessed are you, O soul, who shared in the prophecy: There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth
Ps 19:3-4.
“Give me, O Lord, many fountains of tears, as You gave long ago to the sinful woman … so that I may hear that voice full of joy: ‘Your faith has saved you.’”

“Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life”
The Witness of a Faithful Life
The Revelation continues in His message to the angel of the church of Smyrna (currently Izmir, Turkey) saying, “He who has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”
Rev. 2:11. What is meant by the second death is the eternal death of the evil after the resurrection of the dead.
During this period between the Nayrooz (Coptic New Year) and the feast of the Cross (Toot 1-17 – Sept. 11-27) we live in the remembrance of our church martyrs, praying in the joyful tone, as they fulfilled their life on earth and they are now with Christ. As St. John saw in the Revelation, “These are the ones who came out from the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple and He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.”
Rev. 7:14-15. The Spirit also speaks of their victory saying, “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they did not love their lives to death, therefore rejoice O heavens and you who dwell in them.”
Rev. 12:11-12
Truly this is the great destiny of everyone who lives the life of the true witnessing to the Lord, not necessarily ending his/her life by bloodshed, but through our good faith and our good deeds. This is what the Spirit of God says to the angel of the church of Philadelphia and we the faithful, “Because you kept My commandment to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world… Behold I am coming quickly, hold fast what you have that no one may take your crown, he who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God…”
Rev. 3:10-12
Dear friends, our lives are observed by God and seen in heaven. As the Spirit says to the angel of the church of Pergamos and to us, “I know your works and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is”
Rev. 2:13. This is why we should always be alert to fulfill our lives in God’s fear and pray with Jeremiah the prophet saying, “O Lord though our iniquities testify against us, do it for Thy Name’s sake, for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against Thee.”
Jer. 14:7. Therefore we should always remember God’s promise to us, “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me to give everyone according to his work.”
Rev. 22:12
Three Faithful Witnesses
Below are three examples of those who witnessed to the Lord in their lives on earth to the end, whether they were martyred or not. They are with Christ now, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Rev. 21:4
St. Julietta
Martyr · 6 Mesra · untouched by the fireThe first is St. Julietta whose martyrdom we celebrate on the 6th of Mesra and who was praised by St. Basil the Great. She inherited great wealth from her parents, but an evil person took it from her. When she thought to complain, the evil man informed the ruler that she was a Christian. When the ruler called her for her testimony she reasoned within herself saying that the wealth of this vanishing world is nothing in comparison to the eternal heavenly wealth. She therefore confessed the name of the Lord before the ruler who ordered that she be thrown into a fire. She was martyred this way, but miraculously, her body was not burned at all. She is now with Christ praying for us.
The Righteous Man of Mansoura
He would not lie · the fragrance of incenseThe 2nd example is that of a righteous man from Mansoura, Egypt. Fr. Antonious Younan talked about him, as he was his father of confession. This man was very rich, but he was also a man of God. Due to his simplicity, an evil person managed to have him sign some papers by which he can take all his wealth. All the townspeople knew what had happened and tried to save this innocent decent man, including the lawyers and the judge. The man’s lawyer told him that he agreed with the judge that he would give him all his wealth back if he would testify to events that did not actually happen. However at the time of the trial the righteous man refused to say anything but the truth. The judge asked him many times the same question to try to persuade him to lie, but he insisted on saying the truth. The righteous man lost the trial and all his wealth. He and his wife moved into a small shack on the roof of a building where they spent the rest of their lives with God, praying the hourly prayers, even till his last day. After this man passed away, the smell of incense came from his room and lasted for several days.
Kamal F. Iskander
Sunday School servant · he lived what he taughtThe last example is about a friend of mine named Kamal F. Iskander who served with me in Sunday school in the 1960’s. He was a government inspector for mines located in the Red Sea region of Egypt, which extend on the shore of the sea from the beginning of Egypt to its end. This man’s only means of transportation was the government vehicle he was given for work. It happened that some of his relatives visited him at the Red Sea and he was obliged to use the government car for their transportation. One of his colleagues informed the authorities that Kamal used the car for personal reasons. The lawyer in this case told Kamal that everybody does this because it is the only means of transportation there, the lawyer also said to Kamal, “Just say ‘I didn’t use the car.’ — there are no witnesses.” However, Kamal refused, and said the truth, living what he used to teach in Sunday school. His punishment was 2 months without pay and a permanent mark in his file. However he was happy because he had told the truth. Time went on and everyone knew of his honesty and he was promoted to the highest possible rank. God tested him in his health, but he was patient and thankful till his death to live with Christ.
May the prayers of the martyrs and the righteous be with us all. Amen.
